Attaining the minimal knowledge & skill levels

2nd level: The Novice

This is an exciting time as you prepare for your apprenticeship. This is where we assess your knowledge and bring it up to minimal levels. You are of no real use until you acquire a basic set of knowledge and skills.

This is where you actually decide if this program is for you. It must meet your needs and fulfill a real desire in your life. This is a calling, an avocation, a using of gifts given to you by God. If it is not, you should look elsewhere for your career. Our Typographer will answer any professional questions you might have. We individually tailor the work to meet your specific need during your novitiate. You are responsible to let us know of any difficulties you are experiencing.

Books you might be required to read

This will depend on your current knowledge. For font design and marketing you need a basic knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, & Acrobat, For the actual work of designing fonts you will be using these apps plus FontLab.

All books need to be purchased through our bookstore.

This academy is run on a very tight budget and every little bit helps. We receive a small (less than 5%) commission on sales through our internal bookstore.

There are many more listed in the bookstore

Projects will be assigned to develop critical skills that you need to have available as you start out as an apprentice. They will vary by novice

There will be a final “graduation” project

This will enable you to demonstrate that you are ready to move on into the Apprentice level. This determination is made by the Typographer. He will let you know of his decision.

Once you’re accepted:

The Novitiate

Because you are not helping with provision yet, you will be required to pay your way, but only minimally. This is a 12-credit equivalent program of learning and career colleges are now charging $400 per credit pre month.

The completion of your novitiate is entirely at the discretion of the Typographer. You will be given no warning or prospective date. But, if the relationship develops as it must, there will be few surprises.
